FEATURED ARTIST

Originating in Ottawa, a graduate of the University of Lethbridge, and the University of Western Ontario, Amy Harrison is currently working with small cluttered paintings on paper and some soft sewn sculptures. For the window display in June she will be presenting her current body of work: Aurora Borealis: seeing things in the night sky. This work incorporates cats flying in outer space, floating amongst the stars, clustered in between flowers, planets, nebula, the northern lights and solar systems, in an exploration of personal daydreams and delusions of beautiful imagery that occur while going about everyday life. (Which is very similar to lying on ones back in the grass doing nothing staring into the universe.)

Trap\door will be exhibiting Amy Harrison’s work at The Parlour (310 – 2nd Avenue South, Lethbridge) opening June 28, 2008.

Scott Rogers, Hye-Seung Jung, Shanell Papp, Gisele Amantea, and Carol Williams will be exhibiting artists and writers in "A Haphazard History" at the Trianon. The show opens the evening of June 28th. All of the participants have been in residence at the Gushul Studio in Blairmore in the Crowsnest Pass with the exhibition presenting diverse responses to the region's geography, landscape and history. The exhibit collectively produces an innovative profile of the Crowsnest Pass that challenges some of the formal tourist directed narratives that conventionally dominate.

The Haphazard History of the Crowsnest Pass by Scott Rogers and Carol Williams, a collaborative, self published, chapbook produced during a residency sponsored by Trap/door in 2005, will be launched at the opening. Shanell Papp and Hye-Seung Jung will exhibit work produced during summer of 2007 when the two artists held a second Trap/door-sponsored residency. The result of Gisele Amantea's studio residency, held in 2002 and sponsored by the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, was her bookwork and animated/archival film on Picariello and Lassandro. Copies of Amantea's book will be available for sale and the film will be screened.

WHAT: DON’T CRY OVER SPILT VINYL
Curated by Matthew Connelly and Ted Stilson
WHERE: Pravus Gallery (new location) – 501 E. Roosevelt Street, Phoenix, Arizona
WHEN: Two openings – May 2 (6-10 p.m.), May 16 (6-10 p.m.)

“What was the name of that custom show again?” You can’t make a vinyl purse out of Moody’s ear’, no, that’s not it. Don’t count your Moody’s before they’re hatched. No, no, I’m sure that’s not it. Every cloud has a vinyl lining. No, that’s definitely not it. Oh yeah, now I remember, Don’t Cry Over Spilt VINYL. That’s it! It’s going to be ‘must see’ show. It’s the first U.S. show featuring the Moody platform. I hear that there are going to be over 50 Moody customs designed by an international line-up of established and emerging artist’s – Sket One, Cameron Tiede, Andrew Brandou, PlaysKewl, Bil Betsovic, Doktor A and many, many others. Besides the customs, there is also going to be some 2D pieces by artists like Dan ‘Wavedog’ Fenelon, Arden Hill and Darrin Maxwell. Where is the show taking place and when does it open? The show is going to take place at Pravus Gallery’s new space located in downtown Phoenix at 501 E. Roosevelt Street. The folks at Pravus are really excited and are looking forward to the openings on May 2 and May 16 from 6-10 p.m. Sounds like fun … I’m there for sure!”

starborn

Starborn is my next toy project that will include a comic book that I will be illustrating. The comic book will tell the story (in pictures with very little text) of an ocean spirit called Starborn. Starborn has been around since the dawn of time. It emerged from the sand at the bottom of the ocean shortly after a beam of light from a far away galaxy penetrated the ocean depths. Starborn spends its days wandering the oceans and seas collecting and protecting sea life. It has magical powers and has visions of the future of earth. It can communicate telepathically with sea creatures and hitches rides with them on his journeys. It has short legs because it relies on others to help it navigate. Starborn returns to its underwater cave where it shuffles around and organizes a strange collection of found objects. The underwater sanctuary is also the home of some of his sea creature friends. His headdress is actually a living starfish that he wears when he travels outside his cave. Upon returning to the cave, the starfish slithers off his body and returns to a shallow pond on the cave’s floor.

Starborn will be hand cast and custom painted. The headdress will be a separate piece and the arms and head will be articulated.

Lab : The Parasite Project
May 2nd to 23rd, 2008
Opening: Friday May 2nd, 2008, 7:00pm-10:00pm.

Trap\door member Shanell Brooke Papp (Lethbridge): Lab Kelly Haydon (Vancouver): Shanell’s work deals with the problem of scientific objectivity in relation to the human body. Using the medium of sculpture, she studies and explores human anatomy. The yarn body will be exhibited on a gurney, adding glands and deciding on the sex for the body. It will also include fillet crochet (lace) life size panels of surgery scenes.

Haydon’s drawings arise from the artist’s personal experience with illness and the while very sick with undiagnosed parasites, she was restricted to making small ink drawings on long narrow pieces of paper. Weird, biological images emerged. After initial medical treatment, she discovered through research that a few of the drawings were indicative of some of the microscopic critters she hosted. Haydon began using multi-plate techniques in order to combine abstract biological images with notes and tables.

Art fight
Call for submissions

Institute Parachute is looking for participants for a series of Art Fight parties to commence this spring: young artists with something to prove who are comfortable working with mixed media. In the Art Fight competition, each artist will work in the same mixed-use space at a frenzied competitive pace for 12 hours, with ample opportunity for in-work quoting and winking at the audience and judges. (Judges? Yes, judges.) As the day progresses the initial relaxed studio/ gallery atmosphere will be replaced by a full-blown party. Music, dancing, drinking and celebrat- ing will swirl around the artists and their in-progress projects. ?e work will be constructed from at-hand materials with a thematic linkage developed by the curator from the submitting artists’ interests. At the stroke of midnight, the works will be complete and the panel of distinguished celebrity judges will make their pronouncements. ?e music will suddenly cease, and all eyes will be turned on the work. ?is is an opportunity for only the bravest souls, a game of the highest stakes – a competition for the adulation of one’s peers. Expect some arguing. The first Art Fight is tentatively to take place in June, and applicants interested in participating on that occasion should submit as soon as possible, no later than 15 May. Submissions for future events in the series will be accepted on an ongoing basis. Interested parties should submit a letter of interest and supporting documentation (potentially including CVs, slides, videos, documents, or other materials).
