FABULOUS FESTIVAL OF FRINGE FILM August 2 – August 12, 07 We are looking for submissions for contemporary short films in 16mm, 8mm and video. The works selected by jury will be screened at a local barn that doubles as a concert hall. We will pay artist fees for the successful applicants. The works are not to exceed 12 minutes in length The Grey Zone Collective, working in collaboration with the Durham Art Gallery , is hosting the sixth annual Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film in Durham and surrounding locales and towns. The festival has become recognized as an important venue for the exploration of filmic art in Canada and is one of the major cultural attractions in our part of south-western Ontario . The intention is to bring to these rural communities the issues, concerns and politics of independent contemporary Canadian experimental film and video. Durham is two hours northwest of Toronto . In the 1980s and nineties Durham and area became the destination for many artists and like-minded people seeking an alternative to urban life. After two decades of influx by the adventurous and broadminded (cultural workers, environmentalists, musicians, craft makers, professors, gays and lesbians, entrepreneurs, etc.), the complexion of our local community has changed. Our former roots in agriculture and manufacturing are being transformed by an experience-based economy in which art figures prominently. Our contemporary film programming appeals to the growing population of artists and art aficionados who would not have access to this work otherwise. It creates opportunities for dialogue between visiting and resident artists, broadening regional artistic discourse. Please submit your material in dvd format, with postage and self-addressed envelope if you wish your material returned. Do not send original prints. Tony Massett
