We are all familiar with mass produced buttons representing pop stars, political affiliations, and
even advertising slogans. Now, in an effort to reach a broader range of people, artists are using
low-tech button making machines to produce wearable artworks.

Whether one-of-a-kind designs or limited edition multiples, artist buttons allow everyone to collect
and exchange unique works of art. A lapel, pocket or knapsack can be a miniature, portable art
gallery.

Artist buttons are usually 1” in diameter and images range from original drawings to appropriated
material from the mainstream media. Trap\door president Jill Flaman explains, “The possibilities
are wide-ranging. We’ve made buttons with images from an artist’s sketchbook, from boy scout
badges, and from comic books.”

Artists that chose to make buttons are frequently interested in breaking down the boundaries
between high art and popular culture or kitsch. By using an ordinary, accessible format, artists
question whether or not art is the exclusive domain of art galleries and museums or something
that can found almost anywhere and owned by just about anyone.

The call for submissions for this exhibition was spread far and wide. Nearly forty submissions
were received, from around the globe including Finland, Mexico and Australia. The artist’s button
designs will be exchanged after the exhibition and each will receive one of the fellow artist’s buttons in return.

Some of the designs have been enlarged for the exhibition to showcase the variety and intricacy
of designs. These will be auctioned off after the exhibition to raise money for future Trap\door
programming. Further details will be posted on our website.

Trap\door Artist Run Centre has been producing artist buttons in Lethbridge since 2005. Buttons
produced by Trap\door are available for a loonie through a gumball vending machine placed in a
variety of locals throughout the city. The vending machine will be at the Joan Waterfiled
Gallery during the Button Up! exhibit.

Application deadline April 14, 2007

Medalta International Artists in Residence Program attracts ceramic artists both established and emerging, from all over the world. uninterrupted time. Each ceramic artist who attends takes away from the experience a better understanding of the legacy of clay that the Medalta Potteries and Hycroft China have given us.
