Newsletter Vol. 2 Iss. 4, March & April 2006

Trap\door is the name of the new artist run centre in Lethbridge, Alberta.

The name was chosen because of its connotations with the hidden, the undiscovered,

the potentialities present but not yet surfaced, the surprise that comes

when you suddenly drop through a previously-solid floor and plummet,

like Alice, to vexation and enlightenment.

Presently we are a centre without a space, so don’t try to find us.  We’ll find you.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS for August Residency in the Crowsnest Pass

Trap\door is offering a collaborative residency between a senior, established cultural practitioner from outside the visual arts and an emerging visual artist from Alberta.  This project is designed to combine the skills, knowledge, histories and varied approaches of two creative individuals working in different disciplines.  The objective is to promote innovative artistic production for display or dissemination, such as art work(s), a public talk, and a supporting publication.  The two will do a residency together at the University of Lethbridge’s Gushul Studio for the month of August, 2006.

The Gushul is located in the scenic Crowsnest Pass in the town of Blairmore, Alberta.  Trap\door chose the Gushul as the location for this project because it is designed to accommodate two working artists and has been successfully utilized for seventeen years by professional artists and writers from across Canada, the United States, and Europe.  It is an exceptional space which meets the requirements of the project and has the added extra incentive of allowing artists in residence to interact with, and contribute to, the vitality of the Crowsnest Pass community.

Trap\door has selected Carol Williams, a Lethbridge resident, as our “established cultural practitioner from outside the visual arts.”   Williams is uniquely qualified for this project:  Not only is she the award winning author of Framing the West: Race, Gender and the Photographic Frontier in the Pacific Northwest, but she also has an extensive knowledge of visual culture and was a founding member of the Vancouver Association of Non-commercial Culture (an artist run centre).  She is an avid supporter of Trap\door, arts organizations and individual artists within our community.  Furthermore, as an experienced educator, Williams is well known for her active support and encouragement of emerging artists and will make an excellent senior member of the collaborative team.

Trap\door’s Annual General Meeting will be held Sunday, March 19 from 1pm to 3pm at the Bowman Arts Centre. Trap\door’s current and future direction will be discussed, and a new Board of Directors will be introduced.

“Narrative Threads & Other Yarns” closed at the University of Lethbridge on March 3. The show was a wonderful success.  Many thanks go to Josie Mills and the staff at the Main Gallery, and especially to Board Member Nancy McPhee, who took on most of the work.

Prairie Tales 7, however, despite being thoroughly enjoyed by its audience, had a rather disappointing attendance. This annual touring media art screening came to us from Metro Cinema and the Alberta Media Arts Alliance Society and featured 13 short works by independent Alberta artists.

BUTTONS BUTTONS BUTTONS

Buttons designed by artists Len Komanac and Joseph Anderson are still available.  The vending machine is currently located at the Tongue’n’Groove, and there are only about 75 buttons left.  Buttons are $1 each, with each buttons being part of a limited edition of 5.

Trap\door is not limiting its button production to special projects, however, and is extending its services to the general public.  If you would like information on getting 1” buttons produced for your group or event, click here.
